Together with the lake, Arco castle is one of the most characteristic features of the landscape of the Lake Garda area. The Arco castle dominates the plain of the river Sarca where the river widens out. Three paths, nestled among some wonderful olive trees and oleanders, wend their way up towards this imposing castle, which was once the residents of the Counts of Arco during the Middle Ages. Having passed the last curtain walls, one enters the Prato della Lizza, a verdant balcony overlooking the land below, dominated by the three giant walls of the Great Tower, the Sasso Prison and the Hall of Frescoes, which contains some fine paintings, such as those depicting a game of chess and medieval battle scenes. The uppermost part, the Renghera Tower, served as a last refuge from sieges.
