Located in the municipality of Tenno, the lake basin was formed as a consequence of the landslide of Dossi di Ville del Monte, which blocked the course of its tributary. It is the sixth largest lake in Trentino at 300 square metres, and is located in an unblemished alpine landscape at 570 metres above sea level on the slopes of Monte Misone. With its perfectly circular shape, the lake is an undisputed jewel in the crown of the Trentino region. It is known as Lago Azzurro in Italian, meaning "azure-blue lake", for its breathtaking shades of turquoise-blue. On the lake there is also a small island which, at the end of the rainy periods in Autumn, can be reached on foot when the lake is lower than 15 metres.
